What Does FIA-Compliant Actually Mean?
The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) sets the standards for all protective equipment used in sanctioned motorsport. For race suit patches and name badges, the key standard is FIA 8856-2018, which governs the fire-resistant properties of materials used in driver apparel.
A compliant patch must:
- Be made from Nomex or an equivalent certified fire-resistant fibre
- Not compromise the thermal protection of the suit at the point of attachment
- Be attached using a method that does not introduce non-compliant materials (e.g. standard polyester thread or non-FR adhesives)
- Carry no materials that melt, drip, or ignite easily - ruling out standard polyester embroidery thread
In practice, this means the base fabric, the embroidery thread, and the attachment method all need to meet fire-resistance requirements.
Key Considerations When Choosing a Nomex Patch
1. Base Fabric
The patch itself must be woven or constructed from Nomex (meta-aramid) fabric. This is the same material used in the race suit itself. Patches made on standard woven polyester or cotton backings are not suitable for FIA-compliant applications, regardless of how they look.
2. Embroidery Thread
Standard embroidery uses polyester or rayon thread - both of which melt under heat. For FIA-compliant patches, the embroidery must be worked in fire-resistant thread, typically Nomex or modacrylic. At MotorStitch UK, all our motorsport patches are produced with FR-rated thread as standard.
3. Patch Construction
Patches should have a clean, flat profile with no raised elements that could trap heat or peel away from the suit surface. A merrowed (overlocked) edge is common and acceptable; heat-cut edges on non-FR materials are not.
4. Size and Placement
Most series have specific rules about where patches may be placed and their maximum dimensions. Name badges are typically worn on the chest; sponsor patches are permitted on the arms, chest, and back within defined zones. Always check your series' specific sporting regulations before ordering.
5. Attachment Method
This is where many drivers unknowingly fall short. Patches must be sewn onto the suit using FR thread - not ironed on, not glued, and not attached with hook-and-loop (Velcro) unless the fastening system itself is FIA-approved. Sewing is the only universally accepted method across all FIA-sanctioned series.
How to Attach a Nomex Patch to Your Race Suit
- Position the patch on the suit and pin or tack it in place to confirm placement before committing.
- Use FR thread Nomex or modacrylic sewing thread only. Do not use standard polyester thread.
- Sew around the full perimeter of the patch with a straight or zigzag stitch, keeping stitches close to the edge. A stitch length of 2–3 mm is typical.
- Avoid penetrating the inner thermal lining of the suit where possible. Sew through the outer shell only.
- Check the suit manufacturer's guidance some manufacturers void the suit's homologation if modifications are made without their approval. When in doubt, contact them first.

If your suit has been damaged - a tear, a worn area, or a previous patch that needs replacing - the same rules apply. Repair patches must be made from compliant Nomex fabric and sewn with FR thread. A poorly repaired suit may no longer meet its original homologation standard.
