Why Sponsor Patches Matter for Your Race Team
Sponsor patches are one of the most visible elements of a race team's identity. Whether you're running a single car at club level or managing a multi-driver professional outfit, the quality and consistency of your sponsor patches reflects directly on your team's professionalism — and on the brands that have invested in you.
Getting sponsor patches right means more than just reproducing a logo. It means choosing the correct materials for the application, ensuring FIA compliance where required, and delivering a result that looks sharp under paddock lights, on camera, and in the press.
FIA Compliance for Sponsor Patches on Race Suits
If sponsor patches are to be applied to FIA-homologated race suits, they must be produced from fire-resistant materials. This is non-negotiable at FIA-sanctioned events and strongly recommended at all levels of motorsport where homologated suits are worn.
At MotorStitch UK, our Embroidered Motorsport Nomex Patches are produced using genuine Nomex thread on Nomex base fabric, making them fully compatible with FIA 8856-2018 and FIA 8856-2000 homologated suits. If you are unsure whether your series requires Nomex-compliant patches, check your series regulations or contact your scrutineer.
For team kit, workwear, and non-suit applications, standard embroidered patches on woven polyester backing are appropriate and more cost-effective.
Preparing Your Sponsor Artwork
The quality of your sponsor patch starts with the quality of the artwork you supply. Here is what to prepare before placing an order:
File Format
- Vector files are preferred — AI, EPS, or SVG formats give our digitisers the cleanest lines to work from and ensure logos are reproduced at the correct proportions.
- High-resolution raster files are acceptable — PNG or TIFF at 300dpi or above. JPEG files are acceptable if high quality, but avoid heavily compressed files.
- Avoid low-resolution logos pulled from websites — 72dpi web graphics do not digitise well and result in poor stitch definition.
Colour Specification
- Provide Pantone (PMS) colour references wherever possible. This allows us to match thread colours accurately to your sponsor's brand guidelines.
- If Pantone references are not available, provide the sponsor's brand colour hex codes and we will match as closely as our thread range allows.
- Be aware that embroidery thread colours are not an exact match for print or screen colours — we will always show you a thread colour card or digital proof before production.
Choosing the Right Size and Format
Suit Patches
Sponsor patches on race suits are typically rectangular or follow the outline of the logo. Common sizes range from 60×40mm for small chest or sleeve patches up to 200×80mm for large chest or back panels. The correct size depends on the available space on the suit and the sponsor's placement requirements — many sponsors specify minimum size and clear space rules in their brand guidelines.
Team Kit and Workwear
For team shirts, jackets, and pit crew workwear, patches can be larger and more varied in shape. Die-cut patches (cut to the shape of the logo rather than a standard rectangle) give a premium finish and are popular for team kit applications.
Flags and Banners
Large-format embroidered patches for pit boards, garage banners, and hospitality are also available — contact us to discuss bespoke sizing.
Placement Guidelines for Sponsor Patches on Race Suits
Placement of sponsor patches on race suits is often governed by a combination of series regulations, suit manufacturer guidelines, and sponsor contractual requirements. As a general guide:
- Chest panels — the most prominent position, typically reserved for the primary sponsor or team name
- Sleeves — upper and lower sleeve panels are standard positions for secondary sponsors
- Shoulders — used for series or championship logos, and sometimes for technical partners
- Back panel — large back patches are common in single-seater racing and offer high visibility on TV coverage
- Collar and cuffs — small patches in these areas are used for technical sponsors (fuel, oil, tyre brands)
Always confirm placement with your series regulations before committing to a layout. Some championships have strict rules about where commercial logos may appear on the suit.
Ordering in Bulk for a Full Team
If you are outfitting a full race team — multiple drivers, pit crew, and support staff — ordering patches in bulk is significantly more cost-effective than ordering individually. At MotorStitch UK, we offer team pricing for bulk orders and can manage the full production run from a single artwork file.
For teams with multiple sponsors, we recommend consolidating all patch orders into a single production run where possible. This ensures colour consistency across all patches and simplifies the logistics of fitting.
To discuss team pricing and bulk order options, contact us with your team size, number of sponsors, and required quantities.
Turnaround Times and Proofing
Standard turnaround for embroidered sponsor patches at MotorStitch UK is 7–10 working days from artwork approval. Rush turnaround is available for pre-season or pre-event deadlines — contact us to discuss.
Every order includes a digital proof for approval before production begins. For new sponsors or complex logos, we recommend requesting a physical sample before committing to a full run.
