What Is Nomex?
Nomex is a flame-resistant meta-aramid fibre developed by DuPont. Unlike standard fabrics that melt or ignite when exposed to heat, Nomex chars and thickens, creating an insulating barrier between the flame and the wearer's skin. This unique property makes it the material of choice for professional motorsport, military aviation, and emergency services worldwide.

What Does FIA-Compliant Mean?
The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) sets the global safety standards for motorsport equipment. For race suits and associated garments, the key standards are:
- FIA 8856-2018 — the current standard for race suits, balaclavas, gloves, and boots
- FIA 8856-2000 — the previous standard, still accepted in many national series but being phased out
FIA-compliant Nomex patches and badges must be manufactured from materials that meet these standards, ensuring they do not compromise the fire protection of the suit when sewn or applied to it. Using non-compliant patches on an FIA-homologated suit can invalidate the suit's certification — a serious risk that scrutineers at any professional event will flag.
Why Do Race Suits Need Nomex Patches?

Standard embroidered patches — the kind used on casual clothing or team workwear — are typically made from polyester or cotton threads on a woven polyester backing. These materials are flammable and will melt or burn, creating a weak point in the suit's protection.
FIA-compliant Nomex patches solve this problem. They are embroidered using Nomex thread on a Nomex base fabric, ensuring the patch itself is as fire-resistant as the suit it's attached to. The result is a badge that looks sharp and professional while meeting the strict safety requirements of FIA-sanctioned events.
Who Needs FIA-Compliant Nomex Patches?
If you compete in any of the following, FIA-compliant Nomex patches are either mandatory or strongly recommended:
- FIA World Championship events (F1, WRC, WEC, etc.)
- National and regional championships that adopt FIA safety regulations
- Club-level motorsport where FIA-homologated suits are worn
- Karting at international level (FIA Karting regulations)
Even if your series does not explicitly mandate Nomex patches, fitting non-compliant patches to an FIA-homologated suit is poor practice and may be flagged at scrutineering. The cost difference between a standard patch and a Nomex-compliant one is minimal — the peace of mind is not.
What to Look for When Buying Nomex Patches
When sourcing Nomex patches and badges for your race suit, look for the following:
- Nomex thread and base fabric — both the embroidery thread and the backing material should be Nomex or an equivalent FIA-approved aramid fibre
- Correct attachment method — patches should be sewn onto the suit, not iron-on or adhesive-backed, which can delaminate under heat
- Experienced manufacturer — choose a supplier with a proven track record in motorsport embroidery, not a general promotional merchandise company
- Clear product specification — a reputable supplier will be transparent about the materials used and their compliance status
