What Is Nomex?
Nomex is a flame-resistant meta-aramid material developed by DuPont. Unlike ordinary fabric, Nomex does not melt, drip, or sustain a flame when exposed to intense heat. It chars and insulates instead — giving the wearer critical seconds of protection in the event of a fire.
Nomex has been the material of choice for professional motorsport race suits since the 1970s and is now mandated or strongly recommended under FIA Standard 8856-2018 and related homologation rules.
Why Must Patches on Race Suits Be FIA-Compliant?
The FIA's suit homologation standards (8856-2000 and 8856-2018) require that a race suit performs as a system. If a patch sewn to the exterior of a suit is made from a non-compliant material — standard polyester embroidery thread, a woven nylon backing, or a PVC-coated badge — it creates a weak point. In a fire, that patch could melt or ignite before the suit's protective layers do, potentially transferring heat directly to the driver.
For this reason, scrutineers at FIA-sanctioned events can — and do — check badge materials. Using non-compliant patches risks failing scrutineering and being unable to race.
What Makes a Nomex Patch FIA-Compliant?
A genuinely FIA-compliant Nomex patch will typically feature:
- Nomex base fabric — the foundation of the badge is woven or non-woven Nomex rather than polyester or cotton.
- Flame-resistant embroidery thread — thread that meets fire resistance standards, often Nomex-blended or inherently FR.
- No PVC, rubber, or plastic elements — trims, borders, or backings that would melt under heat are excluded.
- Appropriate attachment method — the patch should be sewn (not ironed on) using FR thread directly onto the suit's outer shell.
